What toxins are in my water?

Clean water is vital for health. No one likes drinking water that tastes bad, and worst of all, some bugs in water, metals and chemicals which could make you sick are tasteless. How do you know whether it's safe to drink?

Welcome to my mini rant about one of the most valuable substances on this planet.

I'll keep the ranting short and then get straight to the point about some substances which may be in your water but consider this - If we ran out of clean water tomorrow, imagine how much we would value this priceless substance which is vital to our health and wellbeing. There is a lot of marketing addressing water filters which is misleading to people regarding efficacy, but that's another topic.

First cab off the rank is not a toxin as such, but bacteria

E.coli is one of the most well-known bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illnesses. In some parts of the world diarrhoea is a daily struggle, with all of the health impacts that it brings such as dehydration, reduced nutrient absorption causing stunted growth in children. Even in countries with safer water supplies can have outbreaks of giardia, E.Coli and other GI illnesses. People with tank water can also have problems if animal poo gets washed into the tank and if they aren't properly sealed, dead animals can be found. Yep. So gross.

Now it's important to note that not all filters can deal with removing bacteria. Some filters actually become a breeding ground for bacteria. It's so important not to take any risks with bacteria. I drank "purified" water in India and ended up with dysentery and giardia. That was so much fun (sarcasm) and I don't recommend it to anyone.

As a sidenote, I was so incredibly thin and depleted after that and weighed a very unhealthy 46 kilos. I had no idea about gut health and supporting recovery after that happened which would have been so helpful, but it happened many years before becoming a Naturopath. But I digress.

If your water is suspected to be microbiologically unsafe, boil it for ten minutes. Don't risk the gut damage. It really just isn't worth it. Some people take ages getting their gut right after illnesses caused by dirty water and contaminated food. If you go camping and think the water is fine to drink from that clean looking stream or lake, it likely isn't. It's not worth the risk to your health.

If you use a water bottle, make sure you clean it out everyday. Don't leave it sitting there with water in it and take it out the next day before cleaning and refilling. Get a proper bottle brush and give it a good scrub. Don't buy water bottles which have complicated nozzles to drink from. If it looks hard to clean properly, it probably is.

Second cab off the rank is lead

There is no safe amount of lead. Lead is incredibly dangerous substance and causes reduced intelligence in children. The source of the lead in the water doesn't usually come from the catchments itself. Sometimes it comes from the pipes used to bring the water to your house. Sometimes it actually comes from your tap fittings. Think about those beautiful brass tap fittings. The really fancy looking ones. Yep. Don't get them. Some people buy an undersink filter and then the water coming out through the tap is still leaching lead into your cup because of the tap fittings.

Lead is a big issue that often isn't addressed. It is absolutely vital to assess whether lead is an issue, especially if you have children. There are many other sources of lead besides from contamination in drinking water. Even some pretty looking kids mugs and crockery can have very high amounts of lead in them because of the sorts of glazes used to make them look really pretty. Then there is the issue of old houses with lead paint. If you buy a fixer upper, please test the paint for lead before you start renovating. You will need to take more protective measures and is especially the case if you have babies and small children crawling over the floor, touching and licking walls!!!

Anyway, back to water!

The third toxic substance, well group of substances are: PFAS and associates

There are literally thousands of these Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. They have been valued in the past because they are resistant to a number of things such as heat and stains. They have also been used in firefighting foams. Now there is an awareness that they don't break down and they are dangerous to a wide range of animals.

So, because they don't break down, they are going to be around forever. Well let's hope not, but they have been nicknamed forever chemicals - so there's that. PFOA has been listed as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer because of the association of certain types of cancer (kidneys and testis) by heavily exposed people.

They aren't in every water supply......yet, but certain places have higher levels than others, especially certain parts of the United States. Please don't use Teflon pots and pans to cook in. As much as possible, try to avoid coated anything. Even though the pan or pot may say PFAS or PFOA free, what have they replaced it with? Stainless steel or glass is a much safer option.

What about spring water?

Some spring water is absolutely amazing with a good pH and mineral profile. Being able to bring your own large glass bottles to fill up also eliminates waste and the ingestion of substances used to make plastic bottles. Public springs are also often free to gather from and it can be a fun family event and help you to feel really connected to water and the dependance we have on nature to survive. This can bring such a positive feeling of appreciation for how nature supports us in such abundant (and free) ways.

The safety of the water source is again individual. After rain, some become contaminated with bacteria, and if they are monitored by a government agency, sometimes they are tested and found to be contaminated and a warning sign is posted. You can't rely on this though. Not all springs are monitored by government agencies, and it may depend on the state or local government agency. Another potential issue is heavy metal contamination. One example of a heavy metal risk is in areas that have had gold mining. Either current gold mining, or gold mining in the past. Rainfall can cause fluctuations in the amount of arsenic. Again, springs aren't always monitored and if that's the case, it's better to get the water checked to make sure it's safe.

Would you like to know how to assess your water to ensure you get the best filter to suit your needs?

Often people ask me which water filter to get. I wish there was one magic solution of a filter that does everything.

So that means you need to know what the issues with your water are before even looking at filters. In essence this is what Naturopathy is. "Find the Cause" and "Treat the Cause".

I am creating an on-demand course teaching you how to assess YOUR WATER and presenting research regarding water filters. This way you can get unbiased information to make the best decision for your family. If you would like to know more about this, please click the link below and I'll email you when it's ready.

I wish I had this resource when I got my last filter which had only been tested for a few litres of use. Yep. You read that right. Up to 99% removal of some substances was the claim on the box, but it was only tested on a few litres.

Most lifetime estimates of water filters are estimated. Not sure what they are estimated from seeing most don't test for the lifetime of the filter.

P.S. Just because your water tastes nice, doesn't mean the water is free from contaminants that may affect your health and the health of your family. Lead tastes sweet. Yep. It's not good.
